Food Safety: Country Profile of the Norwegian veterinary field published today

The updated Country Profile presents an overview of the current Norwegian control systems related to food and feed safety, animal health and welfare. The Country Profile also includes the current status of progress made by Norway in implementation of corrective actions related to recommendations issued by the EFTA Surveillance Authority.

In Norway appropriate measures have been implemented for the majority of recommendations issued by the Authority. Recommendations still not satisfactorily addressed by Norway will remain the subject of monitoring.

This Country Profile has been compiled from:

  • documentation from the Norwegian competent authorities detailing how national control systems are organised
  • the results of the Authority'sinspections to Norway in recent years and, in particular, a General Review inspection in Norway which took place in October 2013

The Authority regularly conducts inspections on Norway's compliance with EEA legislation related to the veterinary field. In relation to these inspections the Authority issues recommendations if shortcomings are identified and Norway is requested to present action plans on how to rectify the situation. The Authority evaluates these action plans and systematically monitors their implementation through a number of follow-up activities including conducting a General Review inspection every three years.

The Country Profile is presented in four parts:

Part 1 describes the overall organisation of the Norwegian competent authorities in relation to the different components of the control system.

Part 2 gives a more detailed description of the different control systems that form the complete range of official controls in Norway and covering the whole chain of animal feed and food production.

Part 3 contains an overview of inspections carried out by the Authority to Norway from July 2009 to December 2012, including assessment of specific recommendations reviewed in a General Review inspection of October 2013.

Part 4 contains executive summaries of finalised inspections carried out by the Authority in Norway, since January 2013.
