Food Safety: Country Profile of the Icelandic veterinary field published today

The updated Country Profile presents an overview of the current Icelandic control systems related to food and feed safety and animal health. The Country Profile also includes the current status of progress made by Iceland in implementation of corrective actions related to recommendations issued by the EFTA Surveillance Authority (the Authority).

In Iceland appropriate measures have been implemented for the majority of recommendations issued by the Authority. Recommendations still not satisfactorily addressed by Iceland will remain the subject of monitoring.

This Country Profile has been compiled from:

  • Documentation from the Icelandic competent authorities detailing how national control systems are organised.
  • Results of the Authority's inspections to Iceland in recent years and, in particular, a General Review inspection in Iceland which took place in December 2013.

The Authority regularly conducts inspections on Iceland┬┤s compliance with EEA legislation related to the veterinary field. In relation to these inspections the Authority issues recommendations if shortcomings are identified and Iceland is requested to present action plans on how to rectify the situation. The Authority evaluates these action plans and systematically monitors their implementation through a number of follow-up activities including conducting regularly a General Review inspection.

The Country Profile is presented in four parts:

Part 1 describes the overall organisation of the Icelandic competent authorities in relation to the different components of the control system.

Part 2 gives a more detailed description of the different control systems that form the complete range of official controls in Iceland and covering the whole chain of animal feed and food production.

Part 3 contains an overview of inspections carried out by the Authority to Iceland from May 2010 to January 2013, including assessment of specific recommendations reviewed in a General Review inspection of December 2013.

Part 4 contains executive summaries of finalised inspections carried out by the Authority in Iceland, since February 2013.
