Norway needs to adjust control-system of organic production

ESA proposes measures to improve the Norwegian system for supervision of organic production.

This is the conclusion after the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) carried out its first inspection on organic production and labelling of organic products in October 2018.

Organic production does not allow for use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and also puts restrictions on the use of chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, antibiotics and other substances. In March 2017, Norway amended its legislation to implement EEA acts on organic production.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) is designated with the task to put in place a control system, and has delegated the control tasks to one control body.

ESA holds the opinion that Norway is on the right track and that the system in place is mostly adequate. However, some adjustments are needed. These include planning of official controls and risk based sampling.

ESA's full report includes recommendations to rectify shortcomings and enhance the control system in Norway.
