ESA: Iceland must designate all relevant national reference laboratories

Iceland has failed to fulfil its EEA obligations by not designating national reference laboratories related to feed and food (NRLs) within three categories.

NRLs are responsible for coordinating the activities of official laboratories responsible for the analysis of samples, for instance concerning methods of analysis.

Iceland needs to designate NRLs for additives for use in animal nutrition, for material intended to come into contact with foodstuffs and for residues of veterinary medicine and contaminants in food of animal origin (in three subcategories).

This is the conclusion in a reasoned opinion delivered by the EFTA Surveillance Authority, ESA, today.

A reasoned opinion is the second stage in infringement proceedings. ESA may bring the matter before the EFTA Court if Iceland fails to take the measures necessary to comply with the reasoned opinion within two months.
