Iceland: Equal treatment of basketball players

ESA closes Icelandic case on quotas for foreign basketball players in official matches.

Until August last year, only one foreign player from each team was allowed on the court in official basketball matches in Iceland,. ESA received a complaint about this rule, and found that the quota was discriminatory and limited free movement.

The Icelandic Basketball Association decided to change their quota-system for players. EEA nationals are now exempted from the quota, and are now treated equally to Icelandic nationals, as regards their right to take part in officially organised basketball matches.

ESA concludes that these changes made by Iceland ensure equal treatment of EEA nationals, that they can benefit from the free movement and non-discrimination rights as any other EEA worker, and has therefore closed the case.
