The EFTA Surveillance Authority signs MMoU with the European Financial Supervisory Authorities

The EFTA Surveillance Authority has concluded a Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMoU) on cooperation, information exchange and consultation with the European Financial Supervisory Authorities (ESMA, EBA and EIOPA). The adoption of this MMoU aims at establishing practical arrangements for the cooperation between the EFTA Surveillance Authority and the European Financial Supervisory Authorities.

On 30 September 2016, the EEA Joint Committee adopted decisions amending the financial services annex to the EEA Agreement. These decisions incorporated the regulations establishing the European Financial Supervisory Authorities, as well as initial essential parts of EU financial services legislation, into the EEA Agreement.

The EFTA Surveillance Authority has been vested with the powers to adopt binding decisions and formal opinions addressed to competent authorities and/or financial market participants/financial institutions in the EEA EFTA States. The EFTA Surveillance Authority's role in the EEA EFTA States mirrors the role of the European Supervisory Authorities in the EU Member States.
