Today, the EEA EFTA States have appointed a new College of the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) that will take up its work on 1 January 2018 under the presidency of Ms. Bente Angell-Hansen.

“The new College will be carrying on the important job of safeguarding the EEA Agreement so that Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway can continue to enjoy the full benefits of the Agreement”, says current President Sven Erik Svedman.IMG_0356

Ms. Angell-Hansen has had a long career in the Norwegian Foreign Service. Now, leaving the service and her current position as Ambassador to Austria and Head of the Norwegian Mission to the United Nations in Vienna, she will succeed Mr. Svedman as President of ESA in January.

The Governments of the EEA EFTA States have appointed Ms. Angell-Hansen as ESA President for the period 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019. She is appointed as College member of ESA until 31 December 2021.

Simultaneously, Mr. Högni S. Kristjánsson from Iceland has been appointed as College member from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021. Mr. Kristjánsson succeeds Ms. Helga Jonsdottir and comes from the position of Permanent Representative to the United Nations, EFTA and WTO in Geneva.

Mr. Frank J. Büchel from Liechtenstein has been reappointed as a member of College from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021. Mr. Büchel first took up his position in the ESA College on 1 January 2014.

The EFTA Surveillance Authority monitors compliance with EEA rules in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, enabling them to participate in the European internal market. ESA performs its duties independently of the three States. For more information, check out ESA's website.
