PR(04)17: The EFTA Surveillance Authority approves a prolongation of a Norwegian temporary grant scheme for the shipbuilding industry


The EFTA Surveillance Authority decided today to approve a notification from Norwayconcerning a prolongation of a temporary grant scheme for the shipbuilding industry  (temporary defensive mechanism to shipbuilding). The scheme was approved last year by the Authority [[1]] and today’s decision prolongs the application of the scheme until 31 March 2005. The decision does not imply any substantive changes to the scheme.

The purpose of the scheme is to offset the adverse effects caused by unfair competitive practices of the Republic of Korea. Contracts for the building of container ships, product and chemical tankers and LNG carriers are, according to the rules of the scheme, eligible for direct aid of 6% of contract value before aid. The available budget is NOK 300 million. (approx. EUR 37 million) for the total period of the scheme from 15 March 2003 until 31 March 2005.
