PR(05)14: The EFTA Surveillance Authority approves a scheme for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from vessels registered in the Norwegian Shipping Register

The EFTA Surveillance Authority decided today to approve an aid scheme whose aim is to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from vessels registered in the Norwegian Shipping Register. The scheme notified by Norway will provide co-funding to ship-owners for modifying existing engines of the vessels or replacing them with a less polluting ones. All measures taken must be proven to reduce NOx emissions.

The scheme will be open to all commercial ships registered in the Norwegian ordinary shipping register (Norsk ordinært skipsregister), with engine power exceeding 750 kW and operating in the Norwegian coastal area and/or providing services to installations on the Norwegian continental shelf.

The aid scheme has been approved with a one time budget of 10 million NOK.
