State aid: Changes to Norwegian aid scheme for research centers approved

The Authority today approved an amendment of a scheme providing support to centres for research based innovation (CRIs) in Norway. Seven new CRIs will be included in the scheme.

In order to allow for the setting up of the seven new CRIs, the total budget for the scheme is raised from NOK 1120 million to NOK 1680 million.

The Authority approved the original CRI scheme in 2007[1] and considers the new amendments not to have any impact on the assessment it had carried out in its Decision of 2007. The scheme complies with the terms of the Authority's Guidelines on aid for Research, Development & Innovation.

The CRIs involve the co-operation of private and public bodies with financial support from the Research Council of Norway. The scheme was developed to support long-term R&D activities in Norway and to facilitate active alliances between research active enterprises and research institutions.

On 25 February 2011, the Norwegian authorities notified the changes to the originally approved scheme. In addition to the expansion, the duration of the scheme is extended from 2015 to 2019 (support for the CRIs established in 2007 will however be terminated in 2015).
