State aid: Power contracts for Alcan and Íslenska kísilfélagið cleared

The EFTA Surveillance Authority today cleared two power contracts which the state-owned Icelandic power company Landsvirkjun has concluded with Alcan and Íslenska kísilfélagið.

Iceland had notified the two contracts for legal certainty. The Authority has found that the contracts do not entail state aid and decided to give the green light for the contracts.

Whilst the Authority could not exclude that the contracts are imputable to the Icelandic state, it found that they did not confer an advantage on the companies. Both contracts should yield an acceptable return for Landsvirkjun. They do not contain a link between the contract price for electricty and commodity prices, as was customary in the past.

A non-confidential version of the Decisions will be published in the register of state aid decisions on the Authority's website, normally within a month from the date of the Decisions.
