State aid: Green light for the aid to district heating in Liechtenstein

The EFTA Surveillance Authority today approved the Liechtenstein authorities' plans to grant aid to the citizens' co-operative Balzers for the construction of district heating fuelled by renewable energy in the Liechtenstein municipality Balzers located in southern Liechtenstein.

The plant will produce 14.5 GWh of district heating annually. 1.65 million litres of oil is needed to produce the same amount of heat per year. The district heating plant is thus capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 4000 tonnes annually.

The plant will generate district heating from renewable sources and replace existing combustion of oil and gas. The positive environmental effects outweigh the limited effect of the aid on competition and in light of this, the Authority has concludedthat the state aid is compatible with the EEA Agreement.

A non-confidential version of the Decision will be published in the register of state aid decisions on the Authority's website, usually within a month.
