PR(08)74: Norwegian support to research, development and innovation in the wood sector compatible with the EEA Agreement

The Authority approved yesterday the Wood-based Innovation Scheme notified by the Norwegian authorities.

The scheme is aimed at initiating growth and development in the forestry and wood-processing sector. On the basis of the scheme, public funding will be available to all enterprises in innovation and to large enterprises in research and development, for projects contributing to the objectives of the scheme. The scheme opens for cross-border co-operation and collaboration between research organisations and private undertakings.

The Norwegian authorities plan to allocate NOK 14 million (approximately EUR 1.75 million) per year under the notified part of the scheme for a period until 31 December 2013. The scheme will be administrated by Innovation Norway.

The Authority has concluded that measures notified under the scheme amount to state aid but considers that the measures are compatible with Article 61(3)(c) of the EEA Agreement and in conformity with the Guidelines on aid for research and development and innovation.

The Decision will be published in the register of state aid decisions at the Authority’s website.
