PR(07)04: The EFTA Surveillance Authority authorises a prolongation and an amendment to the Norwegian scheme for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from vessels for the period 1 January 2007 until 31 December 2009

14.2.2007

The EFTA Surveillance Authority has authorised today a prolongation and one amendment to the Norwegian scheme to provide state financial assistance for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from vessels in the Norwegian Shipping Register (NOxRED scheme). The objective of this scheme is to decrease NOx emissions from marine engines in vessels. Various technical changes to vessel engines may qualify for support.

The amendment to the scheme takes into account that costs of NOx reductions are now estimated to be higher than originally foreseen. The scheme is prolonged until the end of 2009 and applies to vessels with engine power exceeding 750 kW. Total budgetary expenses for the period 2007-2009 are limited to NOK 50 million (approximately EUR 5.2 million).

The Authority considers that the NOxRED scheme is compatible with the state aid rules of the EEA Agreement and the provisions of the state aid guidelines for environmental protection.
