State Aid: ESA approves prolongation of the Liechtenstein Media Support Act

Today, the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has approved a six-year prolongation of the Liechtenstein Media Support Act, starting from 1 January 2018.

“State aid to media in Liechtenstein aims at facilitating the preservation and promotion of media diversity,” says ESA college member Frank J. Büchel.

„Der-Zweck-der-staatlichen-Beihilfen-fur-Medien-in-Liechtenstein-ist-es,-die-Medienvielfalt-zu-erhalten-und-zu-fordern“,The Media Support Act is managed by the Liechtenstein Media Commission and provides direct and indirect support to the media in the country with an estimated yearly budgetary allocation of CHF 1.84 million. The objective is to preserve the pluralism of opinions, promote journalistic-editorial quality and contribute to the effective exercise of democratic rights.

The Media Support Act was originally adopted in the year 2000. It was replaced by the 2006 act, the approval of which is now being prolonged for the second time.
