State Aid: Norwegian aid scheme for carbon capture can be prolonged

Today, the EFTA Surveillance Authority approved the prolongation of the CLIMIT Demo aid scheme until 2020.

CLIMIT Demo aims at supporting the development, piloting and demonstration of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies for all industries. The scheme is administrated by Gassnova SF.

In 2005, the Authority authorised the scheme for a period of ten years. Given the remaining technological challenges in using CCS on a commercial basis and the resulting need for further research activities, the Norwegian authorities notified a prolongation of the scheme.

In its assessment, the Authority verified in particular the compliance of the scheme with the applicable state aid guidelines as well as the continued need for state aid in the field of CCS technology development. In particular, the Authority took  into account two independent evaluation reports submitted by the Norwegian authorities. These reports assessed the state of the technology as well as the results and learning from the existing scheme.
